Abstract, as submitted

“Platform engineering” is the art of building and managing the infrastructure that powers your applications. It’s a little bit of cloud, a handful of DevOps, a pinch of SRE, and a thick glaze of product management. While platform engineering is “nothing new,” it’s only now being widely talked about and just barely practices in most large organizations. This talk will first cover what platform engineering is and why it’s valuable, then it will cover how to apply and adapt platform engineering in large enterprises, particularly in private cloud scenarios. The challenges here come from working with existing processes and IT stacks. Most organizations can’t simply start from scratch, and, indeed, it’d be a terrible idea to throw out all the stuff that’s currently making all the money. If you support your organization’s apps, platform engineering is something you’ll probably be doing soon. So, come hear how your peers are doing it and share your experiences with us.

This is the text that went into the CFP form, kept as submitted - not a later rewrite of it. Talks get retitled and reworked between submission and stage, so what was actually delivered may differ.
